SBB derailment near Olten
A serious collsiosn occured between train 17075 (Basel-Olten) which was being hauled by SBB Cargo Re 4/4 II 11184 and train 17937 (Sissach-Olten via Laufelfingen), an NPZ railcar, on 6th October 2011.

Up to 30 people where injured. The Re 4/4 II locomotive ended up seriosuly damaged and derailed, standing at a 45 degree angle.

A prototype electric freight locomotive type 2ES5, designed by the TRTrans joint venture of Alstom and Transmash Holding has been completed at TMH's Novocherkassk workshop. The loco is numbered 2ES5 001.

The 2ES5 is a twin-unit Bo'Bo'+Bo'Bo' 25kV AC electric loco designed for heavy freight work, and follows the EP20 passenger locomotive which is currently being tested by Russian Railways, RZD. For ease of maintenance and staff training, the 2ES5 and EP20 locos share a similar internal layout and cab design.
The 2ES5 is rated at 8.400 kW, fitted with asynchronous motors and single-axle traction control.
Series production of 200 locomotives ordered by RZD is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2012. These locos will replace numerous three-unit locos currently in service.

A Hamburg to Stuttgart Intercity train hauled by DB 101 024-8 hit a landslide and derailed near St. Goar, on the Rhein left bank between Koblenz and Mainz on Septemer 11th 2011.

Faz.net LKAB orders another 4 IORE-locos
LKAB of Sweden ordered another four new double-IORE locomotives from Bombardier on 27. april 2011. The new sections will be numbered 127-134.

LKAB currently has 13 IORE-locomotives and is now increasing the number to 17 locomotives. The IORE-locomotives are designed for extremely heavy rail transport. LKAB's ore trains consist of 68 ore cars with a carrying capacity of 100 tons each. Each train carries 6.800 tons of iron ore and is 750 meters long. Ore shipments are transported from LKAB's mine sites in Malmberget, Svappavaara and Kiruna to LKAB's ore ports in Narvik and Luleå and to the SSAB site in Luleå.

Drehscheibe Trenitalia orders more E464
Trenitalia has ordered 50 more Bombardier Transportation E464 electric locomotives on 27. april 2011, thus exercising the option provided for in the contract signed in 2009 for the supply of 100 locomotives. The contract, worth 127 million euro, brings the number of E464-locomotives ordered by Trenitalia to 688, 570 of which are already in commercial service. Delivery is scheduled between 2012 and 2013.

Lok-Report Europorte orders twelve EURO 4000 locomotives from Vossloh España
French operator Europorte has ordered 12 EURO 4000 locomotives. The order has been placed with Eurosco, a subsidiary of Europorte responsible for the management of rolling stock.
Europorte, which is the rail freight subsidiary of Groupe Eurotunnel, will receive the first two EURO 4000 in May 2011. The ten remaining locomotives will be delivered during the second half of 2012.

Ferrovie Emilia Romagna (FER), a private railway company operating in the northern Italy, are putting a lot of old locomotives up for sale, including 10 x D.220 (former V 200's of DB), 3 x D.361 (former 060DA of CFR) and 6 x E.640 (former HZ electric locos).

All of the former German locos has been refurbished with new engines (Caterpillar D3508 V8) between 2002 and 2005, as well as modern digital engine control systems, so it seems like a surprise move that they will be replaced by new (yet unknown) locomotives.

Drehscheibe DB Regio continues to operate S-Bahn Rostock
The S-Bahn regional services around Rostock in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will continue to be operated by DB Regio from December 2012.

- S 1 Rostock Hbf – Warnemünde,
- S 2 Güstrow – Schwaan – Rostock Hbf – Warnemünde,
- S 3 Güstrow – Laage – Rostock Hbf – Warnemünde and
- S 4 Rostock Seehafen Nord – Rostock Hbf – Warnemünde.
New trainsets will be delivered, replacing 20 years old loco hauled doublestock coaches. These will also be used on the RE 7 Wismar – Ludwigslust. In peak-hours the S-Bahn-Line S 1 will have trains running every 7½ minutes, instead of currently every 10 minutes, while line S 2 and S 3 will have hourly services.

The Vectron is third generation of the "Eurosprinter", and as such is a development from the Taurus-locomotive. The locos will be made in freight and passenger versions, capable of 160 kmh and 200 kmh. resp. Optically the new design resembles the SNCB class 1800 electrics.
Two Vectron units were presented at Wegberg-Wildenrath. The first, 193 901, is a multi-system high power (6,4 MW) version with a maximum speed of 200 km/h. A second unit is 193 921, a 200 kmh high-power Vectron for AC voltage systems only, to be certified for Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slowakia and Romania. A third and fourth prototype will be built to get the certification process speeding up.

The design is made by Gudrun Geiblinger and resembles the first German steam-locomotive from 1835,
The Adler. For the next year the loco will be hauling regular ALEX-services in the southern Germany between Regensburg and München.
Fans of the model railroad will have to wait until December, when the model of the loco will be available in stores.
